Winless will meet unbeaten when the Angels conclude their series with the Red Sox on Sunday.
Starting for the Angels will be right-hander John Lackey, who is 0-4 in his career against the Red Sox. The Angels have also gone 0-8 against the Red Sox with Lackey pitching. On the hill for Boston will be Curt Schilling, who is 4-0 in his career against the Angels.
But Lackey drew a pair of no-decisions last season and has yet to face the Red Sox this year. He has also been on a bit of a roll. In his last start, he allowed two earned runs over eight innings for a win over the Devil Rays, and he tossed consecutive complete-game shutouts earlier in July.
"One thing you don't have to worry about John is his competitiveness," manager Mike Scioscia said. "The key is consistency, and John has been one of our most consistent pitchers over the last couple of years."
Schilling earned the victory in his last start but was supported by an 18-hit attack.
LAA: RHP John Lackey (9-6, 2.89 ERA)
Lackey is 4-1 with a 1.69 ERA and 44 strikeouts but only nine walks in five July starts.
BOS: RHP Curt Schilling (13-3, 3.60 ERA)
Schilling is unbeaten at Fenway this season.
Player to watch
Manny Ramirez is 8-for-15 with two doubles, four homers, seven walks and 10 RBIs in his career against Lackey.
