LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim turned a triple play and put together second-inning doubles by Casey Kotchman, Maicer Izturis, Gary Matthews Jr. and Orlando Cabrera en route to a 6-1 victory over the Dodgers on Thursday night before 29,841 at Dodger Stadium in Game 1 of the Freeway Series.
The Angels mounted another three-run rally in the eighth off Dodgers reliever Joe Beimel, featuring an RBI single by Howie Kendrick and a two-RBI double by Bobby Wilson.
Both starting pitchers -- right-hander Hector Carrasco of the Angels and left-hander Randy Wolf of the Dodgers -- went three innings.
Carrasco gave up one earned run on three hits, striking out one and walking one. Wolf gave up three earned runs on five hits, striking out four and walking two.
The Dodgers made it 3-1 in the bottom of the second when Luis Gonzalez scored from second on Wilson Betemit's single.
In the bottom of the seventh, Kendrick started the Angels'
third triple play of Spring Training when he leaped to grab Brady Clark's line drive and threw to first baseman Kotchman to get Andy LaRoche. Kotchman then threw to Kendrick to retire Adam Godwin at second.
