On Tuesday, the Angels start a six-game East Coast road trip that includes three games in Detroit and three in New York. Angels ace John Lackey will make the first start of the trip against the Tigers at Comerica Park.
Lackey is coming off his sixth win of the season, throwing six scoreless innings against the Mariners on Wednesday. Lackey is 5-0 with a 3.47 ERA in eight career starts against the Tigers.
Last season, the righty won his only start against Detroit, pitching eight scoreless innings.
The Tigers counter with lefty Mike Maroth, who is 4-2 with 5.40 ERA in nine career starts against the Angels. Maroth pitched 4 2/3 innings in his only outing against the Angels this season, allowing three runs on seven hits.
The Angels and Tigers split the two-game series at Angel Stadium in April.
LAA: RHP John Lackey (6-3, 2.43 ERA)
In his last start, Lackey pitched through a bruised left ankle courtesy of a line-drive single by Kenji Johjima. Lackey, a model of consistency, has held opponents to three or fewer earned runs in eight of nine starts.
DET: LHP Mike Maroth (3-0, 4.69 ERA)
Maroth was rained out and then scratched from his last scheduled start on Thursday in Boston when he came down with an intestinal virus. He's expected to be back at full strength for his meeting with the Angels, who denied him what would've been a victory a month ago by knocking him out in the fifth. The Tigers are 7-0 in games he starts, the first time that has happened behind a Detroit pitcher since Milt Wilcox in 1984.
Player to watch
Gary Matthews Jr. is 5-for-12 (.417) with a double, two homers and four RBIs in his career against Maroth. Matthews went 4-for-9 (.444) with a home run, two RBIs and four runs scored in the two-game series in April.
