"It feels much better," Weaver said. "They took an X-ray to see if there was anything wrong with the spine, and it was good. I've got to keep my hamstring stretched. Tightness in the hamstring is causing a spot in the lower back to lock up. I've been stretching three or four times a day."
It was a recurrence of a problem that has hindered him off and on for several weeks. Weaver wasn't sharp from the beginning against the Cards, yielding three earned runs on five hits and two walks.
Coming off one of his best pitching performances of the season in San Diego, Schmidt struggled in his second start since being activated from the disabled list on Sunday against Toronto. He allowed six runs on nine hits while striking out three over just four innings.
Schmidt was tagged for four extra-base hits, including a home run by Troy Glaus. He consistently hit 88 mph and reported no pain in his shoulder.
LAA: RHP Jered Weaver (5-3, 4.14 ERA)
Weaver beat the Dodgers in Anaheim on May 19, yielding two earned runs over 6 2/3 innings. He's 3-2 with a 3.58 ERA in six road starts and hasn't given up a first-inning run in his 11 starts, holding hitters to a .213 average.
LAD: RHP Jason Schmidt (1-3, 6.43 ERA)
Schmidt needs a big effort to impress his new fans. He is 0-3 with a 12.60 ERA in three home starts.
