Hunter bangs out two hits in opener

Rangers 3, Angels 3
at Tempe, Ariz.
Thursday, Feb. 28

Rangers at the plate: Josh Hamilton had a second big day at the plate with an RBI triple in the first inning and a single in the fourth. David Murphy was 2-for-2 and Ian Kinsler was 2-for-3 in the leadoff spot.

Angels at the plate: Torii Hunter, the big free agent signed by the Angels in the offseason, fit nicely in the middle of the order. He led off the second inning with a single and later scored, then had an RBI double in his other at-bat of the afternoon in the third inning. Gary Matthews Jr. opened the exhibition season as the Angels designated hitter and was 1-for-2.

Rangers on the mound: Kason Gabbard allowed one run on three hits and a walk in his first start of the spring. He went two innings and struck out three. Jamey Wright, Kazuo Fukumori and Kameron Loe each pitched a scoreless inning.

Angels on the mound: Angels starter Ervin Santana went two innings, allowing two runs on three hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Kasey Olenberger followed him with two scoreless innings.

Cactus League records: Rangers 1-0-1; Angels 0-0-1.

Up next: The two teams play for the second day in a row at 12:05 p.m. PT on Friday at Surprise Stadium. Left-hander Matt Harrison and right-hander Robinson Tejeda will pitch for the Rangers, and right-hander Nick Adenhart goes for the Angels.
