Angels at the plate:
Mike Napoli, who had one RBI in six games, hit an RBI triple in the second and scored on Dee Brown's double. Brandon Wood hit his third spring homer, a two-run shot in the second, and it was his third spring hit. Howie Kendrick added a two-run triple in the six-run second.
Cubs at the plate:
Alfonso Soriano, batting second for the second time this spring, hit an RBI double in the first inning to drive in Eric Patterson, who had walked. Derrek Lee hit a double and a triple, and scored two runs. Henry Blanco hit a solo homer with two outs in the sixth.
Angels on the mound:
Ervin Santana, in his fourth spring start, struck out five and gave up four runs on five hits over five innings. Darren O'Day gave up one run on three hits over two innings. Rich Thompson tossed two scoreless innings for the save, limiting the Cubs to one hit while striking out two.
Cubs on the mound:
Ryan Dempster served up six runs on five hits and two walks in 1 2/3 innings and also made a throwing error. Michael Wuertz struck out four of the five batters he faced. Jon Lieber gave up two hits and walked one over four innings.
Cactus League records:
Angels 9-6; Cubs 6-11.
Up next for Cubs:
On Saturday, the Cubs travel to Tucson, Ariz., to face their intracity rival, the White Sox, at 1:05 p.m. PT. Rich Hill is slated to start for the Cubs. Don't expect to see Derrek Lee, Aramis Ramirez or Alfonso Soriano. All three are expected to stay back to spend time with hitting coach Gerald Perry and get some extra work in. The game will be broadcast on MLB.TV.
Up next for Angels:
The Angels play host to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday at 1:05 p.m. in Tempe, Ariz. John Lackey, a 19-game winner last year, is slated to start, his second this spring.
