Angels sign pair of Dominican prospects
ANAHEIM -- With Jerry Dipoto settling into his new role as general manager of the Angels, the club has signed a pair of young outfielders from the Dominican Prospect League: Ayendi Perez and Ranyemi Alberto Mendoza.

Perez, a 5-foot-10, 160-pound left-handed hitter, hails from Azua in the Dominican Republic and was signed for a $25,000 bonus. His strengths are superior speed, defense and the ability to put the ball in play offensively. He projects as a top-of-the-order type of hitter.

Mendoza, a 6-foot-2, 180-pound athlete from Bonao, D.R., agreed to terms for $70,000. He reportedly has the potential to develop into a power hitter and has a good arm to go with average speed. He's a potential middle-of-the-order hitter.

"We want to be as aggressive as possible in Latin America," Dipoto said during his news conference on Saturday announcing that he'd agreed to a three-year deal with two option years. "No farm system out there is deep enough. You can never have enough players."
