Scioscia gives Hunter day off

|
ANAHEIM -- With a wealth of outfield depth, Angels manager Mike Scioscia gave Torii Hunter a day off on Saturday. The seven-time Gold Glove Award-winning center fielder is in a 3-for-19 skid on the homestand.

"Just a day off to clear his mind a little bit," Scioscia said. "The guy plays every day and grinds it. It's the same with Gary [Matthews Jr.], Vlad [Guerrero], Garret Anderson. Once in a while, it's good to relax and watch a game. He understands."

Hunter, batting .285 with five homers and 22 RBIs, isn't a good watcher. He likes to play every day, calling himself an "old-school country ballplayer."

Hunter has missed three starts now after missing only two games with the Twins in 2007, while putting together a career year offensively (.287, 28 homers, 107 RBIs). A toe ailment cost him one start in Seattle.

Matthews was in center on Saturday, with Reggie Willits leading off and playing right field. Maicer Izturis, who had two singles and a walk leading off on Friday night, was in the No. 6 spot in the order. Guerrero took the designated hitter role.
