Figgins out of lineup a day after return

Figgins held out of lineup Thursday

|
TORONTO -- Feeling "soreness in my whole leg," Chone Figgins sat out the series finale against the Blue Jays on Thursday night. He did not, he said, aggravate his strained right hamstring and feels he might be back in the lineup Friday night in Chicago when the Angels open a weekend series with the White Sox.

"I'll see how it feels," the leadoff catalyst said, adding that he didn't think he'd be able to play if there's no improvement before Friday's game.

Figgins made his return from the disabled list on Wednesday night with a single, walk and a run scored in the Angels' 4-3 victory. He handled four chances defensively at third and has made only one error in 33 games.

Brandon Wood, recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake, was in the lineup at third base against the Jays with shortstop Maicer Izturis assuming Figgins' leadoff role.

Asked to identify the source of the soreness in his right leg, Figgins pointed to the synthetic surface at Rogers Centre.

"It's the [artificial] turf," Figgins said. "At home, I was running on dirt and not feeling anything. Here, it didn't give when I tried to dig my spikes in and run."

He said he first felt soreness in the leg after pursuing and catching a popup by Lyle Overbay in the fourth inning. There were no problems, Figgins said, in moving laterally or running the bases.

"He played very well last night," manager Mike Scioscia said. "We want to get him on his feet, see Major League pitching and be as productive as he has been.

"You're going to feel soreness. He worked out aggressively [while on the DL], but playing the game of baseball is different. You're going to feel soreness, you're going to feel stiffness."

Figgins' impact in the leadoff role is a major component in the offense. He has reached base safely in 31 of his 33 starts, a total of 63 times. The Angels are 20-13 when he's in the lineup, 8-7 when he's sidelined.
