ANAHEIM -- The 2012 First-Year Player Draft kicked off on Monday, but not for the Angels. Due to their offseason spending spree, the Halos won't be drafting until Tuesday, when they make a third-round selection with pick No. 114 overall.
The December signings of Albert Pujols and C.J. Wilson didn't just come with a price tag of more than $300 million. It also meant the loss of their first- and second-round picks as compensation -- compensation they didn't get back for the loss of any of their own free agents -- and meant the Angels will sit idly by as the first round rolls through on Monday.
But that, in a way, helped them.
Since they knew none of the top-rated amateur players would fall in their laps, the Angels' Draft evaluators -- a group of roughly 25 amateur scouts, led by scouting director Ric Wilson and overseen by general manager Jerry Dipoto -- could spend more time focusing on the guys who figure to be taken later.
"We didn't really go out and see those higher guys that we weren't going to get," Wilson said, "so what I tried to do was just get everybody to spread out and just sit down and see as many guys as they can see, and really concentrate on the guys that we had a chance to get rather than going out and seeing the guys we have no chance to get."
The Angels' system ranked 19th in the Majors last year by Baseball America and, like most organization, could use more talent behind the plate and will look to shore up as much high-ceiling pitching as possible.
But Wilson, running his second Draft, won't be selecting based on need, at least not until really late in the Draft.
"We're not looking for anything specifically," he said. "We're just looking for the best player we can get. The philosophy is we're going to take guys that create depth in our system, and hopefully a couple of them will become impact players in a couple years."
