The Angels claimed Scott Cousins off waivers from the Mariners on Friday, giving them yet another versatile, left-handed-hitting outfielder who could compete for the final roster spot.

Cousins joins a couple of offseason Minor League signings of similar profile, J.B. Shuck and Trent Oeltjen, as players who could challenge Kole Calhoun for the fifth outfield spot.

Cousins, the former Marlin who's notoriously associated with putting Giants catcher Buster Posey out for the season with a home-plate collision, owns a .183/.231/.291 slash line while appearing in 128 Major League games from 2010-12.

Last year, the 27-year-old played in 61 games for the Marlins' Triple-A affiliate, batting .296 with seven homers and 36 RBIs. The waiver wire previously took Cousins from the Marlins to the Blue Jays in mid-October, then from the Blue Jays to the Mariners in early November.

Now, he puts the Angels' 40-man roster at 37.

"He plays all three outfield positions, swings from the left side; he's an athletic, versatile outfielder, who I feel adds depth to our 40-man roster," Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto said.
