TEMPE, Ariz. -- Tommy Hanson left with triceps tightness and Trevor Bauer gave up four runs in the third inning on Wednesday, as the Angels beat the Indians, 6-5, at Tempe Diablo Stadium.

Hanson, slated to be the Angels' fifth starter, gave up a couple of first-inning runs on a two-run double by Michael Brantley, then breezed through the second and third frames before feeling some tightness in his right triceps. He was removed at the start of the fourth inning for precautionary reasons.

"I felt fine," Hanson said. "I think they're just taking the cautious route."

Bauer, competing for the fifth spot on the Indians' staff, faced the minimum in the first two frames. But in the third, the 22-year-old right-hander gave up a double to Brendan Harris, a single to Howie Kendrick, a run-scoring groundout to Albert Pujols -- starting at designated hitter -- and a sharp single to Josh Hamilton, putting his team in a 4-2 hole.

Bauer -- up against Carlos Carrasco, Scott Kazmir and Corey Kluber for the last rotation spot -- owns a 4.50 ERA in 14 Cactus League innings.

"I made a lot of improvement today," said Bauer, who walked three, struck out none and gave up five hits. "It's Spring Training. It's about getting ready to go for the season and I did a good job of that today. The results obviously weren't the greatest, but I'm happy with it."

Brantley went 3-for-3 for the Indians, Lonnie Chisenhall hit a two-run homer and second baseman Cord Phelps went 2-for-4. Lefty reliever Nick Hagadone held the Angels scoreless through 1 2/3 innings, giving up one hit and striking out two.

"When he commands," Indians skipper Terry Francona said, "he's almost unhittable."

For the Angels, Kendrick went 2-for-4, giving him a hit in all 15 of his starts this spring and putting his batting average at .511. Mark Trumbo went 2-for-4 with a hard lineout and Pujols hit a stand-up double in four plate appearances.

Lefty reliever Sean Burnett, taking over after Hanson was removed from the game, was charged with three runs in the fourth, with Chisenhall's homer and Asdrubal Cabrera's bases-loaded walk giving the Indians a 5-4 lead. But the Angels came back with a run in the fourth and fifth innings, on an RBI single by Harris and a go-ahead RBI single by Trumbo.

Up next for the Angels: Before the Angels face the Rangers in Surprise, Ariz., at 6:05 p.m. PT on Thursday, in a game that will be televised on MLB Network and MLB.TV, and is expected to feature Josh Hamilton's first encounter with his former team, Jered Weaver will get some important work in. Weaver, coming off giving up eight runs in two innings against the A's, will pitch in a simulated game at Tempe Diablo Stadium at 11 a.m. It's his second-to-last outing before Opening Day. In Surprise, Angels long reliever Jerome Williams will face veteran righty Derek Lowe.
