NEW YORK -- Angels shortstop Erick Aybar left Saturday's game against the Yankees in the bottom of the first inning after a throw from catcher Mike Napoli on Derek Jeter's steal of second caromed off Jeter's helmet and struck Aybar in the head.
Maicer Izturis replaced Aybar at shortstop. Jeter was making a head-first slide when the throw from Napoli came off the ground in front of the bag, ricocheting off Jeter into the side of Aybar's face.
Examined by Yankees team dentist Dr. Scott Levy, Aybar was treated with several sutures in his left upper lip. An X-ray of his jaw were negative, and Aybar could play on Sunday in the series finale.
Aybar, who had three hits in Friday night's 10-9 loss, is batting .276.
