Figgins -- a career .291 hitter entering Wednesday's action -- has watched his average rise from .246 to its current .303.
"That's the type of player he is," said the manager. "He was off to a slow start but he's making up for lost time."
TOR: LHP Brian Tallet (3-3, 4.26 ERA)
LAA: RHP John Lackey (1-1, 6.05 ERA)
The stamina was there, but Lackey wasn't as precise with his command as he needed to be while surrendering five earned runs on 10 hits in 7 1/3 innings against the Mariners on Friday night at home, absorbing his first loss in four starts since returning from a strained right forearm. Lackey reached 106 but struck out only two men while walking two, indicating his stuff was less than top shelf. He's 3-3 with a 3.39 ERA in 10 career starts against Toronto. At Rogers Centre he's 3-2 with a 3.11 ERA in seven outings.
Tallet overcame some early problems with command and pitched seven innings against the Red Sox on Saturday at Rogers Centre, earning a win. He walked four batters in the first two innings and gave up three runs -- including a two-run homer by Boston right fielder Rocco Baldelli -- in those two frames. In the third through seventh innings, however, he allowed only two baserunners. He needed 59 pitches (29 strikes) to get through the first and second innings, but only 59 pitches (39 strikes) in the five innings that followed, bringing his pitch tally to a season-high 118. In total, he allowed three runs (all earned) on three hits and four walks, striking out six.
Scioscia said Angels starter Kelvim Escobar will throw a bullpen session on Thursday instead of Wednesday. "But he felt great [on Wednesday]," Scioscia said of Escobar. "We're not anticipating any setbacks." Escobar is still expected to pitch on Saturday against Detroit. ... Scioscia also said that Vladimir Guerrero is still nowhere close to being able to play in the outfield. Guerrero, who is still mending a torn pectoral muscle, has been occupying the designated hitter's spot in the lineup. Scioscia said that Guerrero has not yet been cleared to even play catch and likely won't be able to for another month.
