Angels outfield prospect claimed off waivers

ANAHEIM -- Angels prospect Travis Witherspoon, a toolsy outfielder coming off a rough 2013 season in Double-A, was claimed off waivers by the Mariners on Tuesday.

Witherspoon was a 12th-round Draft pick in 2009, and he spent the last five seasons in the Angels' system. The 24-year-old center fielder, who was rated the Angels' No. 13 prospect by MLB.com, has good speed and power but struggled with the Arkansas Travelers.

After a midseason promotion in 2012, Witherspoon posted a .202/.286/.351 slash line in 54 games. And in his first full season in Double-A in 2013, he batted .214/.299/.342 with 11 homers and 30 stolen bases in 129 games.

Relievers Robert Coello, Andrew Taylor and Brandon Sisk cleared waivers and were outrighted to Triple-A Salt Lake, putting the Angels' 40-man roster at 36.
