Angels Short Hops: Game 2

Fielding the Angels' Game 2, 4-1 win Friday over the Red Sox on a short hop ...

In < 25 words ...
Jered Weaver was spectacular and Maicer Izturis delivered the go-ahead RBI single in the seventh to lead the Angels.

Frozen moment
Erick Aybar hit a hard liner to center field that looked playable, but the ball kept carrying and ended up over the head of center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury for a crucial two-run triple with two outs in the seventh inning to give the Angels a three-run lead they wouldn't relinquish.

Big number
2 -- Hits allowed by Weaver in 7 1/3 innings against the high-powered Red Sox offense. Weaver also struck out seven and walked just two.

Game balls

Jered Weaver

Weaver again proved he loves pitching on the big stage and lowered his career ERA in the postseason to 1.88 in three appearances. Weaver allowed just one run on an RBI triple by Jacoby Ellsbury in the fourth inning.

Maicer Izturis

Izturis again proved he's a solid situational hitter with a big two-out RBI single in the seventh inning off Josh Beckett to give the Angels a one-run lead. Izturis batted .311 during the regular season with runners in scoring position and two outs

Erick Aybar

Aybar's two-run triple in the seventh proved to be the back-breaker for the Red Sox, who couldn't make up the three-run deficit against relievers Darren Oliver, Kevin Jepsen and Brian Fuentes.

Sense of October
Angels manager Mike Scioscia played for the one-run lead in the postseason when he pinch-ran Howard Kendrick for Vladimir Guerrero after the slugger drew a walk in the seventh inning. The unconventional move to pinch-run for one of his best hitters paid off as Kendrick stole second and scored on Izturis' single to give the Angels the lead.

Lines of the Game

VLAD
Hitting
Vladimir Guerrero
2 AB, 1 H, 1 BB
Comment: The batting line doesn't do justice for how important Guerrero's at-bats were for the Angels. He went the other way for a single on a hit-and-run in the fourth inning that led to a run on a sacrifice fly by Kendry Morales before drawing a crucial walk against Beckett in the seventh inning that led to the winning run scored by Kendrick, who pinch-ran for him.

WEAVER

Pitching
Jered Weaver
7 1/3 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 2 BB, 7 Ks
Comment: Weaver followed up John Lackey's dominant performance in Game 1 with a gem of his own in Game 2. Weaver's seven strikeouts also set a career-high for him in the postseason.

Spoken
"There is one thing that gives you command of the series -- when you win the third game in a five-game series." -- manager Mike Scioscia

Next step
Left-hander Scott Kazmir will look to close out the series on Sunday at Fenway Park in a 9:07 a.m. PT start that will be televised on TBS. Kazmir has had success in the past in Boston with a 6-4 record and a 3.05 ERA in 13 career starts at Fenway.
