Angels Short Hops: Game 2

Fielding the Angels' 4-3, 13-inning loss to the Yankees in Game 2 of the American League Championship Series on a short hop ...

In < 25 words ...
Maicer Izturis' throwing error in the 13th inning let the winning run score as the Angels lost a thriller to go down, 0-2, in the series.

Frozen moment
Angels closer Brian Fuentes had Alex Rodriguez in an 0-2 count with a one-run lead in the 11th inning, but he surrendered a tying homer that just cleared the right-field wall and the glove of a leaping Bobby Abreu.

Big number
16 -- Number of runners left on base by the Angels, as they went 3-for-15 with runners in scoring position.

Game balls

Joe Saunders

Saunders was outstanding in arguably the biggest start of his career, yielding just two runs on six hits over seven innings. He was assisted by three double plays that helped end New York rallies in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

Erick Aybar

Aybar drove in Izturis in the fifth inning on a single, then flashed his speed by stealing second base with A.J. Burnett on the mound. He scored the tying run later in the frame on a wild pitch by Burnett with the bases loaded and two outs and Vladimir Guerrero at the plate.

Vladimir Guerrero

Guerrero twice came up with the bases loaded and couldn't deliver, going 1-for-7 on the night with two strikeouts. He left a total of eight runners on base.

Sense of October
The Angels have been making mistakes on the big stage as they made three errors in Game 1 and made two more in Game 2, including Izturis' in the 13th.

Lines of the Game

Figgins
Hitting
Chone Figgins
3 AB, 1 H, 2 BBs, 1 HBP, 1 RBI, 1 SH
Comment: Figgins had a big hit for the Angels with his go-ahead RBI single in the 11th inning, his first hit of the postseason. Figgins later sacrificed Aybar to second in the 13th inning, but Aybar couldn't come around to score.

Saunders
Pitching
Joe Saunders
7 IP, 2 R, 6 H, 1 BB, 5 Ks
Comment: Saunders made just two mistakes all night but paid for both of them when Robinson Cano hit an RBI triple in the second and Derek Jeter hit an opposite-field homer in the third. But Saunders clearly had his good stuff working, striking out five and inducing the three double plays.

Spoken
"I think [Izturis] was trying to make a little too much of that play. You're not going to turn two. If we get an out on any basem we're in good shape."-- Angels manager Mike Scioscia on Izturis' error

Next step
The Angels will head back to Anaheim to host the Yankees for Game 3 at Angel Stadium on Monday at 1:13 p.m. PT on FOX. Right-hander Jered Weaver will toe the rubber against Yankees left-hander Andy Pettitte.
