ST. PETERSBURG -- The Angels placed left-hander Tyler Skaggs on the 15-day disabled list with a left forearm strain Friday before the team's series opener against the Rays.

"He's going to be on the DL, and it looks like a forearm strain," manager Mike Scioscia said. "He'll get some other opinions on exactly what is going on, but we'll just take it one step at a time. It's something that might take a little bit of time."

Skaggs left his start against the Orioles Thursday night after 4 2/3 no-hit innings. The 23-year-old was immediately examined by team doctors, who told him his ulnar collateral ligament was fine.

"It's kind of leaving a salty taste in my mouth, having a really good outing, and all of a sudden you've got to pull the plug on it," Skaggs said.

Skaggs said Friday that the injury was a strained flexor tendon in his forearm, and that his ligament wasn't affected, but his forearm is "pretty sore."

"Can't complain, just taking it day by day," Skaggs said of the diagnosis, which could have been more serious. Still, he's not happy at the time he's had to miss this season.

"It's been unbelievable -- this is the first year, if you look up the numbers, it's the first time I've ever missed a start," Skaggs said. "So for me this is uncharted water. It's frustrating -- it's really frustrating."

Scioscia and Skaggs both said they had no ballpark idea of when he will be able to return. But Skaggs does not need surgery, and Scioscia expects him to be able to pitch again this season.

To replace Skaggs, the Angels recalled left-hander Michael Roth from Double-A Arkansas. Scioscia said Ross was the choice as opposed to, for example, Fernando Salas, because the team needed some length in its bullpen after Thursday's 13-inning game.

Hector Santiago will start in Skaggs' spot on Tuesday against the Dodgers.
