TEMPE, Ariz. -- Angels manager Mike Scioscia said he expected to have an announcement on Thursday about his Opening Day pitcher. If it's anybody but Jered Weaver, it will be a stunning surprise.
Weaver emerged as the staff ace in John Lackey's early-season absence last year and had a career year. Scioscia feels all of his other four starters -- Joe Saunders, Ervin Santana, Joel Pineiro and Scott Kazmir -- have the ability to step into the No. 1 role as well.
"It sounds contradictory with Lackey gone," Scioscia said, "but this is the deepest rotation we've had since I've been here."
He's embarking on his 11th season as the club's field leader.
